Leonard Knight passed away yesterday, at the age of 82. He’d spent thirty years living rough in the desert, building a mountain more or less by himself, out of mud, debris salvaged from the desert, and tens of thousands of gallons of paint donated to him by passing pilgrims. He was a unique, simple, kind soul, who I was lucky enough to meet a few times on my various sojourns into the Salton Sea area. You can see his mountain — dubbed Salvation Mountain — at the end of my film The Accidental Sea.
